The Hoan Bridge, an iconic part of Milwaukee’s skyline since its opening in 1977, has become a beacon of community engagement since the addition of thousands of LED lights in October 2020. Erika Smith, the first executive director of the Light the Hoan initiative, emphasizes the project’s goal of fostering connections and raising awareness through various programs, such as the Miller Lite “Shine a Light” campaign, which highlights local nonprofits and promotes community involvement. The initiative allows residents to dedicate lights on the bridge, thus supporting these organizations and contributing to its maintenance, which is funded by donations rather than city resources. Upcoming plans include illuminating the bridge’s east side by next fall, further solidifying its role as a symbol of unity and hope in Milwaukee. Smith and other supporters have seen how the bridge’s lights can inspire and comfort the community, making it a significant landmark for both visitors and locals.
