Browns Canyon National Monument in Colorado has been designated as an International Dark Sky Place, marking it as the state’s 12th International Dark Sky Park. The announcement, made by the Bureau of Land Management, highlights the monument’s commitment to preserving its night-time environment through responsible outdoor lighting practices. The designation is the result of concerted efforts by the local advocacy group Friends of Browns Canyon, which organized events and conducted necessary light measurements for certification. The monument, spanning nearly 22,000 acres and home to a segment of the Arkansas River, was designated by President Obama in 2015 and is co-managed by the U.S. Forest Service and BLM. Local officials express excitement over the certification, noting its potential to boost tourism while promoting environmental awareness and conservation efforts.
