Browns Canyon National Monument in Chaffee County, Colorado has been designated as the 18th International Dark Sky Place in the state, recognizing its commitment to dark-sky conservation and education. The U.S. Forest Service announced this achievement on December 16, praising local efforts to manage exterior lighting and promote awareness of dark sky preservation. The area, known for its stunning wilderness and cultural significance to Indigenous peoples, offers excellent opportunities for stargazing and meteor viewing. The designation was facilitated by local advocacy group Friends of Browns Canyon, who led fundraising and educational initiatives, with support from federal and local partners in retrofitting lighting to meet certification standards. Staff are now being trained to enhance visitor experiences with night sky programming.
