In a breakthrough study from Macquarie University in Australia, researchers have discovered that bands of light can potentially deter Great White sharks from attacking surfers. Conducted off the coast of South Africa, the research revealed that horizontal LED lights, which alter the silhouette of marine animals, significantly reduced shark attacks on decoy objects. While the method showed promise, researchers noted that illuminating the entire underside of decoys was highly effective but not practical for use on surfboards due to energy requirements and cost. The team plans to further investigate whether these techniques will work on other shark species and their potential applications for enhancing safety for beachgoers. This research comes in light of increasing shark attack incidents, particularly in Australia and Florida, urging swimmers to exercise caution during peak activity hours.
