This week marks International Dark Sky Week, with Bend and Deschutes County in Central Oregon declaring their commitment to reducing light pollution. Local advocates, led by Cathie Flanigan of DarkSky Oregon, are pushing for Bend to become a certified “Dark Sky community,” following Sisters’ recognition earlier this year. The certification process, which can take up to five years, involves substantial changes to lighting policies. While city officials, including a Bend councilor, support the initiative, some rural residents express concerns about safety, fearing that reduced lighting may compromise their security. Nevertheless, the movement promotes responsible lighting practices and aims to preserve the night sky, which has become increasingly obscured by urban light—impacting astronomy observatories like the Sunriver Nature Center. The organization plans to host events, such as a “star party” on June 20, to engage the community in appreciating and preserving celestial views.
