In Toquerville, Utah, the spirit of Christmas shines brightly despite the town’s strict dark sky ordinance. Each December, city officials overlook light display violations, encouraging residents to brighten their homes and the night sky in celebration of the holiday season. This year, Toquerville has revived its Christmas light contest, which offers cash prizes for the best decorations; however, many participants, like Wayne and Caleen Olsen, who boast a staggering 100,000 lights, choose to forgo competition to allow others a chance to win. The Olsens and fellow decorators, such as Gary and Karlene Young, who returned to their festive display after a two-year absence, are driven by community spirit and a desire to spread joy. Their elaborate decorations attract hundreds of viewers each night, embodying the true meaning of the season as they share the light and warmth of Christmas with their neighbors.
