Astronomers in Chile are raising alarms about the increasing threat of light pollution to the country’s renowned dark skies, crucial for astronomical research, especially around the Paranal Observatory. As urban and industrial development accelerates, particularly related to mining and renewable energy projects like the Inna green hydrogen initiative by AES Andes, concerns are mounting about the potential loss of darkness necessary for scientific studies. With light pollution currently at about one percent, astronomers fear further infrastructure could escalate the issue. Chile’s Science Minister, Aisen Etcheverry, has stated that the government is actively seeking solutions to balance the needs of both the astronomical community and energy development, emphasizing the importance of preserving their unique skies for future observational opportunities.
