Sisters, Oregon, has officially been designated as the state’s newest ‘Dark Sky Community’ by DarkSky International, in recognition of the city’s proactive measures to reduce light pollution. This designation, announced on January 22, follows the implementation of a revised lighting ordinance that imposes stricter regulations on outdoor lighting for both residents and businesses. The initiative aims to enhance astronomical visibility while protecting local wildlife and promoting environmental consciousness. Community members, including Sisters High School science teacher Rima Givot, have noted the remarkable stargazing opportunities, such as clear views of the Milky Way and multiple planets. The city has until early 2027 to ensure compliance with the new ordinance, which could also attract astronomy tourism and bolster the local economy. With a growing population, leaders hope Sisters’ commitment to preserving dark skies will inspire other communities to adopt similar responsible lighting practices.
