Collaboration Announced for Advanced Power Semiconductor and LED Development

Siltronic AG, a leading manufacturer of hyperpure silicon wafers, has partnered with the Belgian nano-electronics research institute imec to develop silicon wafers integrated with a gallium nitride (GaN) layer as part of imec’s GaN-on-Si industrial affiliation program. The collaboration aims to enable the production of next-generation solid-state lighting and power semiconductors on 200 mm silicon wafers, leveraging Siltronic’s extensive experience in epitaxial deposition and imec’s pioneering efforts in GaN deposition. By working together at imec’s facilities in Leuven, the two companies anticipate achieving economies of scale that will significantly lower manufacturing costs for GaN-based LEDs and power devices, while also granting early access to advanced process and equipment technologies.
