Commitment to Upgrade Lighting in Local Area

The Liberal National Party (LNP) has pledged $250,000 to preserve the dark skies above Maleny by replacing existing street lights with environmentally friendly LED lighting. Glass House MP Andrew Powell announced this initiative as part of the party’s election platform, highlighting the importance of maintaining Maleny’s status as the last area in coastal South East Queensland minimally impacted by light pollution. The current mercury metal halide lights negatively affect local wildlife, particularly bird habitats. The transition to LED lights, which will include features to direct light downward, is supported by local conservation advocates like Dr. Ken Wishaw, who noted its potential benefits for both wildlife and stargazing. The Greens candidate for Glass House, Andrew McLean, also endorsed the initiative while calling for broader environmental reforms.
