The District of Sechelt is moving closer to becoming Canada’s second official dark-sky community, with plans for an annual dark sky festival that could boost tourism on the Sunshine Coast. Charles Ennis, president of the Sunshine Coast Astronomy Club, highlighted the region’s potential during a council meeting, referring to the successful first Sunshine Coast Astronomy Club Star Party and the interest from local tourism officials in replicating festivals like the Jasper Dark Sky Festival. Ennis noted that during his community outreach efforts, there have been positive developments in reducing light pollution, which is essential for achieving dark sky status. He urged the council to apply for dark sky community status and to create an urban dark sky park at the local airport, emphasizing the health benefits of reduced artificial lighting. The council unanimously supported the motion to pursue this designation, paving the way for future astronomical events and enhanced local tourism.
