The Minot City Council has approved the replacement of aging decorative street lights in Shirley Court, dating back to the 1920s or 1930s, with modern street lighting, estimated to cost around $112,000. In a unanimous 6-0 vote, the council decided to use city reserve funds to cover the expense, relieving local residents of any special assessments that would typically be imposed for such projects. Council member Rob Fuller emphasized that the deteriorating lights are a matter of public safety and basic city infrastructure, arguing that taxpayers should not be burdened again for the city’s maintenance responsibilities. Although some council members initially raised concerns about fairness due to past special assessments placed on other neighborhoods, the decision reflects a commitment to improved city services and enhanced trust with residents. The project will involve installing six new street light poles and LED luminaires to replace the current failing system.
