Controversy Erupts Over Plans to Alter Lighting at Historic Lighthouse

Dozens of objections have emerged regarding a proposed change in the light source at the historic St. John’s Point Lighthouse in County Down, which has stood for over 180 years. The plan involves replacing the current mercury-based rotating mechanism with a low-energy LED alternative, a move that campaigners argue could detract from the lighthouse’s historic character. The Commissioners of Irish Lights, responsible for the lighthouse, assert that the changes will preserve its unique flash characteristics while eliminating mercury. Critics, including members of the Lecale Lightkeepers, fear that the altered light will lose its aesthetic and functional charm. The Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has received 66 complaints concerning the proposed update, echoing similar opposition seen in 2015 when changes were previously proposed.
