At the recent Kendall County Commissioners Court meeting on October 15, members of the Kendall County Friends of the Night Sky were honored with a proclamation declaring October as Dark Sky Month. The initiative aims to promote awareness of light pollution and encourage residents and businesses to adopt Dark Sky Friendly practices to preserve the region’s renowned night skies. Many local properties are overlit for perceived security, but the group advocates for motion-activated lighting as a more effective deterrent. The proclamation highlights the decline in visible night skies due to increased development and light trespass, while calling for improved outdoor lighting practices to protect the area’s astronomical heritage, a commitment reflected in ongoing educational efforts and growing recognition from the International Dark Sky Association.
