Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock is set to deliver a captivating talk titled “Reaching for the Stars – an exploration of the night sky” at Sneaton Castle in Whitby on February 13, kicking off the 10th anniversary of the February Dark Skies Festival. The festival runs from February 14 to March 2, featuring 17 days of events across the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales, as well as the Howardian Hills and Nidderdale National Landscapes. This year’s milestone celebration highlights the festival’s role in promoting the protection of pristine night skies and the growth of astro tourism, particularly since both National Parks achieved International Dark Sky Reserve status in 2020. With an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 attendees each year, the festival significantly boosts the local economy and has led to the creation of Dark Skies Friendly networks, promoting year-round nocturnal experiences. Dame Maggie emphasizes the festival’s importance in reconnecting people with the beauty of the night sky, especially in an era marked by increasing light pollution.
