The Potomac Valley Audubon Society (PVAS) hosted a program on January 9 with Dark Sky advocate Jesse Melton, focusing on the critical issue of light pollution at the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History & Education in Shepherdstown. Melton, representing Bolivar-Harpers Ferry DarkSky, emphasized the detrimental impact of artificial lighting on both the night sky and local ecosystems, noting that 99% of the U.S. population lives under light-polluted skies. He shared that only two out of ten people globally can see the Milky Way due to light pollution, which has significant consequences for wildlife and human health. Melton outlined five simple steps to reduce light pollution, including using targeted lighting and minimizing unnecessary illumination.
