A local advocacy group, Dark Sky New Mexico, is urging state leaders to enhance protections for the state’s dark skies from light pollution by strengthening the Night Sky Protection Act of 1999. The organization plans to propose a bill in the upcoming legislative session that mandates all new lighting to be shielded, directing light downward, and removes current exemptions for certain billboard lights. Senator Greg Nibert supports some provisions of the proposal, acknowledging a mix of feasibility and costs. Dark Sky New Mexico highlights the growing issue of light pollution, which impacts wildlife behavior and is increasing nationally by 10% each year. The state currently has nine designated dark sky places, offering unique opportunities for residents to view the night sky. The legislative session begins on January 21, 2025.
