DarkSky Designation Offers Solution to Preserve Celestial Access

Aotearoa has recently celebrated its fifth Dark Sky Sanctuary designation with the establishment of the Tāhuna Glenorchy Dark Sky Sanctuary, a 200,000-hectare area aimed at preserving the natural night sky around Lake Wakatipu. This recognition, granted by DarkSky International, emphasizes collective community efforts over several years to combat light pollution and promote responsible outdoor lighting practices. While the sanctuary designation is intended to attract tourists and enhance public awareness of light pollution, concerns persist regarding the impact of increasing satellite activity, such as SpaceX’s Starlink communications, which contribute to light pollution and disrupt local wildlife and Indigenous astronomical practices. The community’s push for DarkSky certification reflects a broader desire to reclaim control over night skies amidst growing corporate influence and navigates the tension between technological advancement and ecological preservation.
