Deadline Nears for Dark Skies Initiative as County Lighting Regulations Prepare for Implementation

Summit County and Park City are taking significant steps to combat light pollution through newly implemented dark sky ordinances aimed at preserving the night sky and promoting environmental stewardship. Introduced in 2019 and 2021, these regulations require the use of warm, yellow-toned lights, ensure outdoor fixtures are fully shielded, and set a compliance deadline of December 31, 2024. Summit County Council is now considering fines for non-compliance, prioritizing education over punishment. The ordinances also include unique provisions for agricultural and holiday lighting, while prohibiting uplighting to better protect nocturnal ecosystems and enhance community connection to the stars.
