Decatur is set to enhance safety on the U.S. 31 Causeway and the Steamboat Bill Memorial Bridge with a $1 million project to install modern LED lighting, addressing years of darkness caused by damaged infrastructure. The initiative, led by the Alabama Department of Transportation, will replace aged high-pressure sodium fixtures that had been out of service due to rodent damage to the wiring. Decatur Mayor Tab Bowling expressed excitement about the upgrade, noting that the new LED lights will improve visibility and safety while providing better color representation compared to the outdated system. To prevent future damage, the city will collaborate with a pest control company for monthly inspections and treatments. Construction begins Monday, and drivers should anticipate temporary lane closures and delays during the installation process, managed by Shoals Electric. Local leaders are optimistic that the new lighting will enhance both safety and the aesthetic appeal of this key transportation route.
