The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved an €8.51 million loan for Senegal’s “Programme to Promote Efficient Lighting Lamps” (PPLEEF), a pioneering initiative aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and sustainable development. This program, which is the Bank’s first dedicated demand-side energy efficiency project, plans to benefit approximately 700,000 households and 80,000 small businesses by replacing traditional incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient LED lighting. The initiative is expected to save over 189 GWh of electricity annually, lower energy costs, and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Utilizing an innovative on-bill financing model, participants can repay the cost of LED lights through their monthly savings on energy bills. This project will not only alleviate financial burdens on consumers but also lay the groundwork for Senegal’s broader lighting program and serve as a replicable model for energy efficiency efforts across Africa, aligning with the AfDB’s mission to close the continent’s energy access gap.
