Northumberland has emerged as England’s first International Dark Sky Park since its designation in 2013, drawing significant tourist interest and generating approximately £25 million annually while supporting around 450 local jobs. At a recent Royal Astronomical Society Conference, Duncan Wise, the tourism development officer for Northumberland National Park, highlighted the dual benefits of preserving dark skies: boosting local economies and enhancing biodiversity. Excessive artificial lighting poses risks to wildlife and human health by disrupting natural rhythms, but adopting warmer, downward-facing lights can alleviate these issues. By striking a balance in outdoor lighting, communities can enjoy astronomical beauty while fostering ecological well-being.
