DONEGAL County Council is preparing to allocate over €2.42 million in 2025 for the operation of its 19,500 public street lights, which account for 50% of the council’s annual power consumption. This substantial cost is expected to be mitigated by the ongoing energy efficiency program that has already seen more than 82% of the lights replaced with modern LED fixtures. The council’s transition away from outdated SOX lighting began in 2018, when it borrowed €13 million over five years for upgrades. Despite the increase in the number of street lights—growing by 30% from 15,000 in 2016 to 19,500 in 2024—the overall electricity consumption has decreased by 32%. The council plans to continue its LED retrofit program, focusing on the replacement of higher wattage SON lights, supported by funding from Transport for Ireland for primary road upgrades.
