Eco-Friendly Reminder: Upcoming Deadline for Dark Sky Regulations

Eighty percent of the global population experiences some level of light pollution, which negatively impacts health, wildlife, and energy consumption. In response, Park City and Summit County have implemented ordinances aimed at reducing artificial nighttime light, effective by December 31, 2024. These regulations require the use of downward-facing, shielded lighting fixtures and limit the color temperature of bulbs to warm whites or ambers of 3,000K or less. Seasonal outdoor lights are permitted from November 1 to March 1, with a curfew of 11 p.m. for shutdown. Education and public awareness are prioritized as part of enforcement efforts. Although no financial incentives are currently available, the community is encouraged to learn more about the dark sky ordinances and sustainable lighting practices.
