Kaikōura district has recently been designated as New Zealand’s newest Dark Sky Sanctuary, celebrated for its exceptionally low light pollution that offers a stunning view of the starry night sky, recognized for both its scientific and cultural significance. While this accolade brings excitement to the region, it also necessitates adjustments regarding artificial lighting. To provide further insight into these changes, project coordinator Colette Doughty from the Kaikōura Dark Sky Trust shares her thoughts.
