Westmorland Shopping Centre has upgraded its multi-storey car park with energy-efficient LED lighting as part of Westmorland and Furness Council’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2037. The installation, which began in September and was executed in phases to minimize disruptions, replaces outdated lighting with a modern system designed to reduce glare and provide consistent brightness. The new lighting operates with advanced features, including motion detection that adjusts brightness levels to conserve energy, and utilizes ‘daylight harvesting’ in perimeter areas. This initiative is projected to save approximately 42 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to the impact of planting 3,384 trees. Council officials expressed optimism about the financial savings from reduced energy costs and the project’s contribution to a broader Climate Action Plan aimed at fostering ecological awareness.
