Oregon is emerging as a prime destination for stargazers, with several new designations for Dark Sky Parks, Dark Sky Communities, and the world’s largest Dark Sky Sanctuary, all aimed at minimizing light pollution and enhancing astrotourism. The Oregon Dark Sky Network, comprising various state and local stakeholders, has played a pivotal role in these developments, in collaboration with DarkSky International. Currently, Oregon boasts three Dark Sky Parks—Prineville Reservoir State Park, Oregon Caves National Monument, and Cottonwood Canyon State Park—all offering excellent stargazing opportunities with campgrounds for overnight stays. Notably, the Oregon Outback International Dark Sky Sanctuary is set to expand significantly, increasing its protected area from 2.5 million to 11.4 million acres. With two towns, Sisters and Antelope, recently honored as Dark Sky Communities, Oregon’s commitment to preserving its nighttime skies presents a unique opportunity for visitors to experience stunning astronomical events.
