Strawberry growers in West Sussex have successfully implemented innovative techniques to produce home-grown strawberries for Christmas, supplying an impressive 38 tonnes this holiday season—an increase of 40% compared to last year. The new hydroponic vertical growing system, supported by Tesco, uses 50% less water while yielding 3.5 times more fruit per square metre, allowing for year-round availability. David Moore of Wicks Farm highlighted the environmental benefits of this approach, which reduces reliance on fossil fuels with advanced heating and lighting systems. As a result, around 600,000 punnets of strawberries are expected to be harvested from 175,000 plants during the winter months. Tesco’s Callum Baker praised this milestone in UK winter strawberry production, promising local customers fresh, delicious strawberries for their Christmas gatherings.
