The Scottish Dark Sky Observatory, which was destroyed by fire in 2021, is set to reopen at a new location by Clatteringshaws Loch in Dumfries and Galloway by late 2026. This £1.5 million project, situated in Scotland’s only “gold tier” dark sky park, will feature two observing domes equipped with large telescopes, a 360-degree planetarium, educational spaces, an exhibition area, a gift shop, and a café. The initiative aims to inspire visitors with immersive astronomical experiences while creating jobs and volunteering opportunities. Trustees emphasize that the new site will provide excellent views of celestial phenomena, including nebulae and meteor showers, enhancing Scotland’s reputation for its dark sky sites. The project has received support from the South of Scotland Enterprise, reflecting its potential to boost local tourism and education in science and environmental protection.
