The Scottish Dark Sky Observatory, destroyed by fire in 2021, is set to reopen at a new location in Dumfries and Galloway by late 2026, promising to “rise from the ashes” as a more expansive facility. The £1.5 million development will feature two observing domes equipped with large telescopes and a 360-degree planetarium, alongside educational spaces, an exhibition area, a gift shop, and a cafe. Situated on the banks of Clatteringshaws Loch within Scotland’s only “gold tier” dark sky park, the observatory will offer visitors a chance to view celestial phenomena such as nebulae, star clusters, and meteor showers. Trustees highlighted the opportunities for job creation and volunteer positions, while the project is expected to contribute to the region’s tourism sector. The initiative is backed by local authorities and acknowledges the significance of preserving Scotland’s dark skies for educational and recreational purposes.
