The Scottish Dark Sky Observatory, which was destroyed by fire in 2021, is set to reopen at a new location on the banks of Clatteringshaws Loch in Galloway Forest Park in late 2026. The £1.5 million project will feature two observing domes with large telescopes, a 360-degree planetarium, and various educational facilities, including a gift shop and cafe. The new site, recognized for its exceptional dark skies within Scotland’s only “gold tier” dark sky park, will enable visitors to view celestial phenomena typically obscured by light pollution. The initiative aims to inspire future generations about the cosmos while also fostering local tourism and employment opportunities. Professor Catherine Heymans, a supporter of the observatory, emphasized its potential to captivate visitors with the beauty of the night sky in this ideal location.
