Despite stringent regulations, the use of destructive LED devices for fishing is severely harming the marine ecosystem along the Kollam coast. Many boats, including trawlers, are reported to be utilizing high-intensity lights to attract fish, which traditional fishers say is depleting fish stocks and jeopardizing their livelihoods. The Fisheries department has intensified inspections and taken action against such practices, seizing illegal equipment during recent crackdowns. However, traditional fishers claim that illegal use of LED devices continues, particularly among vessels from Thiruvananthapuram, leading to increased competition and disputes in the fishing community. They assert that these practices not only threaten the sustainability of fish populations but also the overall health of the marine environment, prompting calls for enhanced enforcement measures to protect their way of life.
