New traffic lights at the Bombay Interchange in Auckland are causing temporary congestion, particularly on the Mill Rd eastbound approach and the southbound off-ramp, but officials assure that the system is functioning as intended. Stephen Collett, regional manager of transport services, stated that queues should gradually improve over the coming week as both the traffic management software adjusts to the area’s flow and motorists adjust to the new layout. Franklin Ward councillor Andy Baker noted the common initial delays associated with new traffic signals and highlighted ongoing efforts by the New Zealand Transport Agency to address these issues and enhance safety for road users. Collett emphasized that while the introduction of traffic lights will not solve all existing problems immediately, they will provide significant safety benefits and help manage queue lengths on the off-ramp. A comprehensive upgrade of the interchange is planned for the future, aiming to enhance capacity and accessibility for local and regional travelers.
