Fundraising for Bay Bridge Lights Approaches Target, Possible Return in 2024

The stunning light installation, The Bay Lights, which adorned the Bay Bridge from March 2013 until its last show in March 2023, may soon return thanks to local arts nonprofit Illuminate nearing its $11 million fundraising goal. Illuminate’s founder, Ben Davis, recently reported that about 90% of the funds have been raised, largely through private donations from notable figures, with just $450,000 left to secure. Plans for a revamped version, named Bay Lights 360, aim to double the number of LEDs to 50,000 and enhance visibility across the bridge. Renowned light artist Leo Villareal, the original creator of this iconic installation, is also back on board, promising a spectacular reimagining of the artwork, which previously stimulated local business and revitalized the waterfront area.
