Government Allocates $10.5 Million to Enhance Solid-State Lighting Technologies

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded over $10.5 million in funding to nine projects focused on advancing solid-state lighting (SSL) technology, in line with its ongoing initiative to enhance energy efficiency and reduce costs in lighting solutions. The selected projects, spanning 18 to 24 months, will delve into core technology research and product development within the SSL domain. This funding round, which does not include manufacturing projects, aims to boost public-private investment in SSL innovation to more than $13.5 million. Noteworthy recipients include Cree, Inc., Columbia University, and the University of Michigan, each working on various aspects of SSL technology—from enhancing LED performance to improving OLED reliability. These initiatives reflect DOE’s commitment to fostering advancements that improve both product quality and sustainability in the lighting sector.
