Over 1.88 lakh LED street lights have been installed in Jammu and Kashmir as part of the Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP), according to a report presented in the Lok Sabha by Minister of Power Manohar Lal. Launched in 2015, the SLNP aims to enhance energy efficiency in public lighting across urban and rural regions, with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) managing its execution. By March 31, 2025, a total of 188,860 LED street lights will be operational in the area, while Ladakh remains unaddressed by the initiative. The programme has led to substantial nationwide electricity savings of approximately 8.8 billion kWh annually, translating to financial benefits of Rs 6,178 crore for municipalities. However, EESL is currently facing a challenge with outstanding payments of Rs 2,700.54 crore from various states and local bodies, prompting the Ministry of Power to seek timely resolutions for these dues. Future plans for SLNP are set to expand into key areas of Ladakh to further improve energy efficiency and connectivity.
