Greens Parliamentary Members Advocate for Dark Sky Conservation in Tasmania

In a recent address, Ms. Badger emphasized the importance of protecting dark skies, not only in Tasmania but globally, highlighting their greater societal value compared to mere infrastructure like stadiums. She shared insights from the Valuing Dark Skies Conference in Melbourne, attended by over 200 participants, focused on addressing light pollution’s detrimental effects on wildlife, including turtles and various flora and fauna. Ms. Badger praised local communities for their initiatives to promote dark skies, including events and monitoring efforts, and urged the government to establish a Southwest Dark Sky Sanctuary to enhance Tasmania’s nature tourism appeal, especially as neighboring New Zealand has already designated several dark sky areas. She concluded with a poignant reminder of our connection to the skies, calling on the government to take action to preserve this vital aspect of our environment.
