Harlem High School is competing in a national contest to secure new lighting for its football field and a modern track that will enable the school to host track meets. Currently, the school’s lighting system, installed in the late 1970s, provides a mere 4.3-foot candles of illumination, far below the recommended 50-foot candles. Additionally, the existing cinder track has not hosted a meet since the late 1990s. Coach Lyle Faulkinberry emphasizes that modern, energy-efficient lighting would not only improve practice conditions and extend hours but also foster community engagement through evening events. The competition features 10 schools nationwide, and supporters can vote for Harlem until November 4, 2024, by visiting sofigamechangers.com/vote.
