Charlie Wilson, an apprentice mechanic at Hayton Service Station, argues against the removal of street lights in his village, despite improvements in car headlights. He emphasizes the importance of street lighting for pedestrian and cyclist safety. The local council currently maintains 40,000 street lights and 2,300 illuminated signs, with 75% of them transitioned to energy-efficient LED lighting. This initiative has not only aimed to reduce costs, which total £1.84 million in electricity and £850,000 in maintenance annually but also to address concerns about community safety.
