In her recent article, Rosalia Coz, an intern at Fairfax County’s office of Environmental and Energy Coordination (OEEC), highlights the growing Dark Sky conservation movement aimed at combating light pollution, which negatively impacts human health, wildlife, and energy consumption. Light pollution, primarily caused by artificial light at night (ALAN), leads to issues like “sky glow” and disturbed ecosystems. Coz advocates for the adoption of dark sky lighting, which minimizes unnecessary light exposure by using shielded, warm-colored bulbs that direct light downwards. She outlines the benefits of such lighting, including enhanced safety, improved sleep, and reduced energy waste, while providing practical tips for implementing these strategies at home. Coz encourages community involvement and offers resources for further education on light pollution, including an upcoming event titled “Save the Night!” scheduled for November 17 at the Vienna Community Center.
