While vertical gardens provide fresh produce year-round and utilize less water, they significantly increase energy consumption compared to professional setups, with artificial lighting accounting for up to 50% of energy usage. Researchers emphasize the need for improvements in energy management, such as adopting LED lighting and enhancing ventilation efficiency, to make these systems more sustainable. Additionally, labeling energy use could help consumers make more informed choices about their indoor gardening systems.
