Researchers at Macquarie University, led by Dr. Laura Ryan, are exploring an innovative shark deterrent technique in Mossel Bay, South Africa, utilizing strategically placed bright lights to disrupt the visual identification of potential prey by great white sharks. During their six-year study, the team towed seal-shaped decoys equipped with various light configurations to determine how the sharks reacted. The experiment revealed that while traditional decoys attracted sharks, the application of specifically arranged LED lights significantly reduced attacks by breaking the decoy’s silhouette into less recognizable shapes, effectively creating an “invisibility cloak.” Although promising, the study’s findings require further testing to determine if similar results can be achieved with surfboards, and researchers are looking to adapt this technology for other shark species. The hope is to develop non-lethal deterrents that enhance safety for surfers and watercraft users.
