Kerala Faces ₹243 Crore Loss as ‘Nilavu’ LED Street Light Initiative Falls Short

The Nilavu project in Kerala, intended to replace traditional streetlights with LED bulbs, has culminated in a setback for the state government, resulting in a loss of ₹243 crore. Launched with ambitious plans to install 10.5 lakh LED bulbs, only 360,976 were actually replaced, with 73,922 identified as defective. Despite the Kerala State Government advancing ₹289.82 crore for the initiative, and 84% of the funds allocated to Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), the project failed to meet its targets. The project, inaugurated by the Chief Minister in February 2021, has been criticized for mismanagement, with local authorities pointing to shortcomings by both EESL and the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) as key factors in its failure.
