The Keweenaw Mountain Lodge has introduced a new red light trail to enhance its dark sky experience, part of ongoing improvements to the Keweenaw Dark Sky Park. This initiative aims to showcase the stunning night sky of the Keweenaw Peninsula while enabling hikers to navigate safely without disrupting their night vision. Developed in collaboration with University of Michigan professor Mojtaba Akhavan Tafti and APT Solar Solutions, the red light fixtures were specifically designed to preserve the rhodopsin proteins in the eye, preventing the loss of night vision. This project was made possible through support from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s office of Future Mobility and Electrification. Visitors interested in the lodge and its dark sky offerings can find more information, including details about an upcoming winter Night Sky Photography workshop.
