Transport for London (TfL) is advancing its decarbonisation efforts with the installation of 6,000 LED bulbs at King’s Cross St Pancras Tube station, part of a broader initiative to upgrade lighting across 120 stations in the network. This upgrade, which has already converted over 40% of Tube stations to LED technology, not only enhances visibility and passenger comfort but also significantly reduces energy consumption and carbon emissions. The new LED systems are expected to save around 1,400 MWh annually, equivalent to the energy needs of 500 homes, while cutting costs and the carbon footprint by nearly 300 tonnes. TfL’s ambitious plan aims to fully transition all stations to LED lighting by the start of the next decade as part of its broader commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. Other initiatives, including upgrading depots and introducing zero-emission buses, further demonstrate TfL’s dedication to creating a sustainable and climate-resilient London.
