The Friends of the Lake District is set to coordinate the fifth annual Big Lighting Switch Off on March 28, starting at 7 PM, in Ambleside and Grasmere. This initiative encourages local businesses and residents to turn off unnecessary lights overnight to conserve energy and protect wildlife, with street lights in central areas also being switched off. The evening will feature a drop-in event at the Ambleside Parish Centre showcasing dark sky-friendly lighting, followed by a talk on the Dark Skies Cumbria Project. The National Trust invites attendees to Allen Bank in Grasmere for stargazing. Project officer Jack Ellerby highlighted the detrimental effects of artificial light on both wildlife and human health, emphasizing the importance of reducing light pollution. Local councillor Will Clark praised the event’s popularity and its alignment with council priorities on sustainability and well-being. While Ambleside and Grasmere’s Switch Off occurs in March, the Keswick event will follow on April 28.
