The Friends of the Lake District’s Dark Skies Cumbria project will host its fifth annual Big Lighting Switch Off on Friday, March 28, starting at 7 PM in Ambleside and Grasmere. This initiative encourages local businesses and residents to turn off unnecessary lights overnight to conserve energy and protect wildlife. The event will feature streetlights in central Ambleside and Grasmere being turned off, along with evening activities at Ambleside Parish Centre, where attendees can explore dark sky-friendly lighting and attend a talk about the Dark Skies Cumbria Project. Additionally, the National Trust invites participants to stargaze at Allen Bank in Grasmere. Organizers emphasize the importance of reducing light pollution for both environmental benefits and community well-being, aligning with Cumbria’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2037. A similar event is planned in Keswick on April 28.
