Mayo County Council’s new strategic capital delivery team, led by Pat Staunton, has provided updates on two significant projects within the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District during a recent meeting. The team is focusing on regenerating the former Sisters of Mercy Convent in Westport and revitalizing Newport, both critical to the region’s development. Staunton reported that tenders for the convent project are set to be processed by December, with contractor work anticipated to begin in early 2025, aiming for completion by the end of 2027. The Newport project will include an enterprise hub, public realm works, and Dark Sky-friendly lighting, with respective completion dates ranging from late 2025 to mid-2027. While Cllr Brendan Mulroy expressed optimism about Staunton’s leadership, Cllr Gerry Coyle highlighted the absence of projects for the Erris region, although Staunton noted that additional initiatives are in the works pending funding approval.
