Leading Retailers Adjust Projections for 2025 as U.S. Consumer Spending Decreases

A recent decline in consumer confidence has prompted national retailers, including Abercrombie & Fitch, to adopt a more cautious outlook for their sales in 2025. The Conference Board reported the largest monthly drop in consumer confidence in over four years, with respondents expressing growing concerns about inflation and trade tariffs. Following the imposition of new tariffs on imports from key trading partners Mexico and Canada, as well as an increase on Chinese products, retailers now foresee challenges ahead, with Abercrombie expecting sales growth of only 3% to 5%—a significant decline from the 16% increase seen last year. Shares for Abercrombie plummeted over 14% on the news, reflecting broader struggles in the retail sector, with Target and Walmart also projecting lower sales due to the financial pressures stemming from the tariffs.
