Chinese scientists at Fudan University have made a significant breakthrough in internet connectivity by successfully connecting four computers using a one-watt LED bulb, as reported by Xinhua News. This innovative technology, known as Li-Fi, utilizes light as a medium for transmitting data at speeds of 150 mbps, vastly surpassing the current average speeds in China and the U.S. With embedded microchips, the LED bulbs can send data through pulses of light, presenting a cost-effective and energy-efficient alternative to existing wireless technologies. Despite its potential, Li-Fi is still in the early research phase and faces challenges, such as signal loss when the light source is blocked. Scientists are hopeful that this technology could improve internet access, especially for underserved rural areas. Sample kits of the Li-Fi technology will be showcased at the upcoming International Industry Fair in Shanghai on November 5, 2013.
